Under the guidance of Dr. Hon Vu Duong, the GES team revisited Candon City in November 2023, marking six years since our last impactful visit to the city in 2018. Dr. Duong proudly reports the successful completion of 59 cataract surgeries, 12 pterygium excisions, and 1 oculoplastic procedure, all executed with precision and compassion. The team shared their expertise through engaging lectures on topics such as Acute Vision Loss and Red Eyes, enriching the knowledge of local medical staff officers.
The gratitude expressed by patients was palpable, as they not only received life-changing treatment but also gained invaluable knowledge to better care for themselves and their loved ones.
This trip also marked the last mission for our founder, Kenneth C. Westfield M.D. As the driving force behind the organization, Dr. Westfield’s vision and leadership have shaped countless missions and transformed thousands of lives. This final journey was filled with deep emotion and heartfelt farewells. Having dedicated many years of his life and career to leading and investing in GES, he took time to reflect on the impact of the organization and the strong bonds formed over the years. His departure from active missions was met with an outpouring of appreciation from both colleagues and patients, notably during an end-of-trip dinner where he and his colleagues exchanged remarks, reminiscing about past missions and celebrating the indelible differences he has made. Though this was his last mission, Dr. Westfield continues to inspire and guide us in our future endeavors and remains an active member of the board.
