Who we are

The Global Endowment for Sight is a 501c3 non-profit organization that empowers communities to see their full potential by providing no-cost or affordable eye care to those who need it most as well as investing in local healthcare capacities and resources.

Our mission is to build sustainable healthcare delivery in underserved communities in order to foster a society with little to no low vision.

Our collaboration with medical practitioners, academia and public and private health care sectors allows us to bring vital medical and surgical services, expertise, educational experiences, equipment and supplies to our community partners.

Together, we are transforming lives and elevating the standard of eye care, with the intention to expand our impact as our support continues to grow. Discover the captivating personal narratives that inform our work and explore the empowering programs that keep us inspired.

Our Why

Over 1.1 billion people worldwide live with some level of visual impairment. By 2050, this number is expected to surge to 1.7 billion. 80% of cases are treatable and/or avoidable by providing glasses or performing cataract surgery. However, access to these treatments poses a challenge for individuals residing in low-middle income countries, where the cost and availability of essential health services continue to hinder accessibility.

We focus on addressing the needs of the 90% by making these simple yet effective solutions more accessible and affordable. Too often, those affected accept vision loss as a fate, without realizing that there is hope for sight restoration.

Our medical team is committed to strengthening local health care professionals with education and training, infrastructure and equipment, medicines, supplies and research, contributing to the long-term sustainability of healthcare in our partner communities by reducing reliance on external aid.

Vision and sustainability

Our goal is not only to leave a lasting impact wherever we go, but one that is tailored to the local context. Our programs are designed with flexibility and sustainability in mind, ensuring coevolution and collaboration between us and the communities we serve. Our contributions are not limited to temporary aid and resources. We work closely with local partners to envision healthcare delivery and infrastructure-building strategies, and we offer education, resources and support until there is no need for external assistance.
