The Ripple Effect of Restoring Vision
Place: Sololá, Guatemala
Mission Date: January 2024
In January 2024, a medical team led by Dr. Todd Jackson embarked on a mission to Guatemala, where they encountered Rosa Gonzales, a widow and mother of two. Diagnosed with a cortical cataract in her right eye, Rosa’s vision loss forced her to stop working to avoid the risk of injury. Her son, the family’s sole provider, faced immense pressure as he took on the responsibility of caring for Rosa and his grandmother.

The economic and political instability in Guatemala compounded their struggles. Rosa’s son, who had managed a small business, was forced to shut it down due to these pressures. Desperate and determined to find a solution for his mother, he discovered the social program “Iluminando Vidas.” This program introduced him to the possibility of free cataract surgery for Rosa.
On January 9, 2024, Rosa underwent a successful surgery that restored her vision. This procedure not only brought back her sight but also renewed her independence. With her regained vision, Rosa could once again contribute to the household, allowing her son to pursue other opportunities and alleviate some of the family’s financial burdens.
Rosa’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of accessible and affordable healthcare. Her journey highlights the intricate connections between health and economic stability. We are deeply inspired by Rosa’s resilience and the positive change brought about by our mission.
We hope Rosa’s story shines a light on the importance of global health awareness and the profound difference that accessible healthcare can make in the lives of individuals and their families, as well as the broader ripple effects it can have on entire communities.
